3D Printing Is the Best Thing to Happen to Card Displays

Your cards were mass produced. The way you show them does not have to be.

Made to fit your cards. Not roughly. Exactly. Every accessory in this hobby is designed for an average collection that nobody actually owns. A printer makes the object fit the card instead of the other way round.

Here is a small frustration every collector knows.

You own a thick memorabilia card in a 130pt holder, a slab from a company whose case is a slightly odd size, and a run of twelve cards you want displayed together as a set. You go looking for something to hold them properly, and you find three options: too big, too small, or designed for a completely different hobby.

The card industry manufactures at a scale where accessories have to be generic. Your collection is not generic. That gap is exactly where a 3D printer lives.

Part 01

What You Can Actually Make

Not theory. These are objects that solve problems collectors genuinely have.

Display stands

Cut to the exact depth of the holder you own, at the angle you actually want, rather than the one angle the injection mould allows.

Multi-card frames

Hold a rainbow, a team run or a set together as one object. The moment a group is displayed as a group, it reads as a collection rather than a pile.

Wall mounts

Fitted to your case, your wall, your spacing. And made to be removed without taking the paint with them.

Storage boxes and dividers

Sized to your shelf rather than to a standard. Dividers cut for your own categories, with the labels built into the plastic.

Logo and name pieces

A player’s number, a team wordmark, your own logo, standing next to the cards. This is where a display stops looking like storage.

Show and trade-night kit

Transport trays, sorting racks, a stand that folds flat in a bag. Everything a table needs and nobody sells.

Photography props

Small risers and angle blocks so every card photo in your collection is framed identically. Consistency is what makes a set of photos look deliberate.

Replacement parts

The clip that snapped, the foot that vanished, the lid that never fit. Reprinting one part beats replacing the whole thing.

Things nobody sells

The honest category. If you can describe it and measure it, it can exist. That is the actual point.

💡 The one that surprised me

Dividers. Unglamorous, cheap to print, and they changed how I use my own storage more than any display piece — because a box you can navigate is a box you actually open.

Part 02

Made to Measure, and Why That Matters

Bought accessories are compromises by design. A printed one is not, and the difference shows up in four ways.

  1. The fit is exact

    Not “fits most standard cases.” Fits the case in your hand, measured with calipers, with the tolerance you chose.

    A holder that rattles is a holder that eventually dings a corner.
  2. It matches your collection, not a generic one

    A stand for a run of twelve. A frame shaped around a specific rainbow. A plate with the right name on it. Nothing off the shelf does that.

  3. You can iterate

    Print it, live with it a week, change the angle by three degrees, print again. Try that with an injection-moulded product.

  4. It costs almost nothing per piece

    Filament is cheap. The expensive part is designing the first one — and after that you can print ten.

Part 03

Doing It Without Damaging Anything

A printed object sits next to cards worth far more than the plastic. A few rules, and none of them are optional.

  • Print a holder for a holder, never for a bare card. The card stays in its sleeve or case; the printed part supports that. Layer lines are mildly abrasive and cards are not
  • Sand or line any face that touches a case. A strip of felt on the contact surface costs nothing and removes the risk entirely
  • Mind the heat. PLA is easy to print and perfectly fine indoors, but it softens at temperatures a sunny window or a parked car reaches without effort. PETG is the safer default for anything on display near light
  • Never design a part that clamps or presses on a card. Gravity and a lip are enough. Pressure is how cards get dented
  • Let fresh prints air out before shutting them in a sealed box with your collection
  • Match the point size. A stand built for 35pt will not take a 130pt patch card. Measure before you design — the thickness guide has the conversions
⚠ The one that catches people

A beautiful PLA display piece in a south-facing window will slowly deform over a summer, and it will take whatever it was holding with it. If the sun reaches it, print it in something that can take heat.

Part 04

Plastiqueurs

Full disclosure, since this is the part where I talk about my own thing.

I run an association called Plastiqueurs, which makes custom objects and accessories using filament 3D printing. Card displays are not all we do, but they are the part that overlaps with this site — and the reason this article exists is that I kept printing things for my own collection and realising other collectors had the same gaps.

The process is straightforward: you describe the object and the constraint — the holder, the number of cards, the shelf depth, the wall — and it gets designed around those measurements rather than around an average.

Being upfront Plastiqueurs is mine, so treat this section as what it is: the author talking about his own association. Nothing on this page is an advertisement for a product you have to buy, and everything in the sections above works exactly as well with any printer, any maker space, or a friend who owns a machine. The technique is the point, not the supplier.

Part 05

What to Have Made First

If you are starting, do not start with the ambitious thing.

  1. A stand for the holders you already own

    Smallest useful object, immediate payoff, and it proves the fit before you commit to anything bigger.

  2. Dividers for the box you use most

    The least exciting item here and the one you will notice every single day.

  3. Then the display piece you actually wanted

    By now you know the tolerances, the material and how it looks in your room. Build the ambitious thing third, not first.

💡 Measure the holder, not the card

Every printed accessory in this hobby is built around a case, not around cardboard. Give whoever is designing it the actual holder — or its exact point rating — and the fit takes care of itself.

Questions

Three that come up whenever I show somebody a printed piece.

Is printed plastic safe next to cards?
As a holder for a holder, yes. Keep the card in a sleeve or case and let the printed part support that instead of touching cardboard. Sand or line any surface that presses against a case, let fresh prints air out before sealing them in with a collection, and never design something that clamps.
PLA or PETG?
PLA for anything that lives indoors away from direct sun — it is easier to print and holds fine detail well. PETG when the piece will sit in a window, near a radiator, or travel in a car, because PLA softens at temperatures those places reach easily.
Do I need to own a printer?
No. Maker spaces, local print services and any friend with a machine will all do the job. What matters is having the measurements and knowing what the object has to solve — the printing itself is the easy part.
