Why He Matters

Derek Lamar Fisher is the answer to a question collectors keep asking: how much is a role player worth? He averaged 8.3 points across eighteen seasons. He was never an All-Star. He also has five championship rings, which is four more than most Hall of Famers, and he was on the floor for every one of them.

The Lakers took him 24th overall in 1996 out of Arkansas–Little Rock, a small-conference program where he was Sun Belt Player of the Year. He arrived the same summer as Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal and spent the next decade doing the things that do not show up in a box score — setting the defense, steadying the huddle, taking the shot nobody else wanted.
