The French Basketball Podcast Boom

A quick note on why a trading card site is writing about podcasts.

Because they are the same instinct. Collecting cards and listening to three hours a week of people arguing about pick-and-roll coverage both come from wanting more of the thing than the highlights give you. The podcast boom and the card boom in France are the same audience, discovering that depth is available if you go looking for it.

And because this is a genuinely good news story. French basketball media used to be thin. It is not thin any more, and almost nobody has written down what is actually out there.

The Map, by Approach

Not a ranking. Ranking these would be silly — they are doing different jobs. What follows is organised by what you actually want at a given moment.

The Wider Field

Verified as active French-language basketball shows, with their publishing rhythm as listed on Apple Podcasts. This is not exhaustive, and that is the point — a scene you cannot list completely is a healthy scene.

Publishing rhythms are as declared on Apple Podcasts in August 2026 and change with the season — almost everything speeds up in October and slows down in July.

The Honest Finding: the WNBA Gap

I went looking for the French WNBA scene expecting to find something comparable to the NBA one. I did not, and it is worth saying plainly rather than pretending otherwise.

The women's game is covered, but mostly as a segment inside other shows. The BasketSession daily round-up regularly ends with a WNBA point, and the show devotes full episodes to the league. And One covers NBA and WNBA together and is the closest thing on this list to sustained French-language WNBA coverage. Dedicated women's basketball podcasts exist in French, covering the LFB, EuroLeague and WNBA together, but the scene is far smaller than on the men's side.

And the Cards? Potes Cartes

Since this is a trading card site, the obvious question: is there a French podcast about the hobby?

There was, and it was good. Potes Cartes launched in March 2021 and ran for five seasons — a French show devoted entirely to trading cards, hosted by Alex, Adrien and Greg. More than a podcast, it was a community of enthusiasts built around the hobby. Its remit was genuinely wide: sports cards across the NBA, NHL, MLB, NFL, football, boxing, wrestling, tennis and Formula 1, alongside the trading card games — Pokémon, Magic, Lorcana, Yu-Gi-Oh. News, interviews, giveaways, lives, breaks, collection tours, and a short weekly format called Potes Cartes Chrono profiling a collector in three minutes.

What made it matter was that it took the French hobby seriously as a scene rather than as a subset of the American one. There were episodes recorded live from the Paris Card Show with the organiser and the exhibitors, an interview with the father of a French player who had just signed seven thousand Topps cards, features on French card companies, and a nostalgia episode about Carddass, pogs, marbles and the first NBA cards handed out at McDonald's. That last one is the whole appeal: it was a podcast about our version of this hobby.

Potes Cartes wound down more than a year ago, after five seasons and sixty-seven episodes.

Card Podcasts, North American Edition

If you want hobby audio right now, you listen in English. Five that are genuinely regular and genuinely complete, rather than five that happen to be loud.

Also regular and worth a look: SlabStox's SX Podcast, running since 2019 in a short-form weekly format, and Sports Cards Nonsense for a looser register.

Ten American Shows Worth the Effort

If you read English comfortably, the depth available is on another scale entirely. Ten that cover the NBA, the NCAA and the WNBA, grouped by what they do.

Also worth knowing: The Athletic NBA Daily for a daily briefing, NBA Today from ESPN, Dunc'd On for long-form analysis, and the Winsidr Show for dedicated WNBA coverage.

Why This Is Good for French Basketball

Beyond the obvious pleasure of having things to listen to.

1. Depth stopped being a privilege

   Understanding a defensive scheme used to require English, a subscription and a lot of effort. Now somebody explains it in French, for free, on a Monday morning.

2. Specialisation became viable

   A draft-only show. A tactics-only show. A single-franchise show. Those only exist when the audience is large enough to be divided — which is itself the proof of growth.

3. The scene talks to itself

   Hosts appear as guests on each other's shows constantly. That cross-pollination is what turns a list of podcasts into an actual media ecosystem.

4. French players get followed properly

   There are now enough French players in the NBA that an entire episode can be devoted to their season outlook — and there is a French audience that wants exactly that.

5. It feeds everything else

   Including this hobby. People who listen to three hours a week about the league are the people who end up wanting the cardboard.

Building a Rotation

You cannot listen to everything. A workable weekly stack:

• One daily for news. Twenty minutes, first thing. This is your baseline
• One weekly analysis show for depth. Monday morning is the natural slot
• One specialist matching what you actually care about — draft, one team, the W, French basketball
• One wildcard for culture, interviews or history, listened to when you feel like it rather than on a schedule
• Nothing else. A backlog of unlistened episodes is a hobby turning into an obligation, and we have a whole guide about that particular trap

What I Would Still Like to Hear

Since everybody enjoys being told what to make.

• A serious French WNBA show, with the frequency the league deserves
• A French NCAA show that follows the college season itself, not only the draft prospects inside it
• A basketball history podcast in French — eras, franchises, forgotten players
• And, selfishly, anything at all about basketball cards in French. There is a genuine hole there, and I am not going to pretend I have not thought about it
